Due to the summer we’re a week later than usual, but hey, we made it. Episode 10 contains twenty four tracks (or actually twenty eight) in an uplifting genre that starts kind of groovy and builds up to more energetic tracks with the current chart killers KNAS, Nito and Brap as a summum. Then I built a little break just before for the kind of experimental encore with tracks that were too good not to use, but didn’t quite fit in the main mix. Total playing time is nearly 90 minutes. After my recent mix, I wanted to do another one, but a different genre I’m used to: Disco.

It’s a sound you don’t hear often, but nowadays there are quite a lot of records which pay homage to the sound of yore, the 70’s and 80’s sound. In 2008 I was pleasantly surprised by Balance Electric vol 04 mixed by Agent 86. For me it was the first compilation with music like this, but at the same time the compilation had created a blueprint of what a compilation like this should sound like.

While browsing for tracks for my previous mix, I stumbled upon the second track of this mix, which totally captured the sound I was looking for. Inspiration was born.

Although the tracks are quite obscure, most of them are brand new, like the opening track. Nice and slow and disco-y, a good start! The second track fitted right in, but some editing was needed because of an annoying sound. Luckily, you don’t hear any remnants of it!

The third track sounds familiar to me, but the 80’s sound is unmistakenly present. The fourth track has been a favorite of mine from Science Fiction Jazz 12, cool track, especially the lyrics. Track 5 and 6 have those lighthearted lyrics which fit this style perfectly. The transition between the two sound pretty cool!

Track 7 has that 70’s sound and track 8 was the other favorite from Science Fiction Jazz 12. Track 9 and 10 have lighthearted melodies close to the disco sound, but I wanted a little change of pace around this time in the mix. Jimmy Edgar is the producer of track 11. Some people would describe this track as sexy, I would call it perverted, obscene and downright filthy. I love it! The track after that is very much in line with what I usually play, but I think it suits this mix well. After that, a nice track I found in the Breaks section on Beatport. It is picked up quite nicely by track 14, an electro poppy track. One of the better transitions of the mix.

Track 15 and 16 have a good bassline and some nice melodies. Track 17 ends with a track you would dance to on the floor. I slow down the mix again for a nice chill out track.

Eclectic Electric is going to be series, at least, I hope so. It has been very nice working on this mix and I have learned a lot creating it!

Iets meer dan een half jaar na Techtonic Plates, een nieuwe mix van mij. Vorige mixen kwamen tot stand door het verzamelen van goeie platen uit compilaties of livesets in de loop van een periode. Deze keer ging ik zelf op pad op Beatport om mooie platen te vinden. Dat was het proces zoals ik dat in de jaren ‘90 altijd deed (en velen met mij), maar dan met stapels vinyl in platenzaken.

Ik had al 3 platen op het oog, the Warm up (#2), Pale Horses (#7) en die vieze, vieze Bauhaus (#14), een hele flinke minimale technoplaat. Dus een minimale plaat op 110 bpm, een prachtige plaat op 120 bpm en ranzige techno op 125bpm. En een minuut of 70 stilte op te vullen. De tracklist:

De eerste plaat was ik direct verliefd op. Be There. Die basale begin ‘90 groove. Lekker langzaam en loom en paste mooi bij nummer 2. Nummer 3 was ook een oude bekende die ik van stal had gehaald, nu ik toch op 108 bpm bezig was. Prachtige plaat, lekker fris en zomers. Robert Babicz maakt meestal wat minimalere platen, maar weet altijd goed de emotie uit dansmuziek naar boven te krijgen. Zijn remix van Rette mich Spaeter vind ik dan ook erg lekker hierachter passen, ook lekker fris en zomers. Ik had de twee platen niet helemaal goed over elkaar heen gelegd in Ableton, maar het resultaat van de overgang vond ik wel heel lekker! Zo lekker, dat ik in de zip 3 extra mp3-tjes heb toegevoegd, zodat je kunt horen hoe de 2 originele clipjes de overgang vormen. Puur geluk! De overgang van 108 bpm naar 120 bpm is niet zo subtiel vanwege een swoosh-geluid in Rette mich. Ik had hier helaas geen betere oplossing voor.

Daarna Ghost, iets meer de diepte in, maar nog steeds fris en melodieus. Reset maakt het al iets meer ‘rough’. Alexander Kowalski is hofleverancier in deze mix met 4 tracks. Van Reset weer iets mooier, met Pale Horses. Ook Gui Boratto weet de emotie goed te pakken. Echt een prachtige plaat, vooral halverwege als de accoorden steeds veranderen. Mooi triest, ook die snik in de geluiden. Nog steeds kan ik mijn hoofd niet stilhouden als ik de track luister. Daarna weer een plaat van Alexander Kowalski, gevolgd door 3 platen uit de essential mix van John Digweed, herontdekt op Beatport. Hele goeie platen! Secret Cinema is ook weer als vanouds bezig met een lekker plaatje. De laatste plaat van Alexander Kowalski, nummer 13 in de mix, wordt heel erg diep met een vleugje melodie, maar daarna barst het beukwerk los. Flink ingekort komen zowel de Sledge als de Mallet Mix door elkaar heen door je speaker gedreund. Speedy J en Chris Liebing maken de technofase van de mix compleet met hun herkenbare sound, Magnit Express. De mix zou geen mix van mij zijn zonder happy end, dus Gui Boratto mag afsluiten met zijn prachtige No Turning Back.

Bijna twintig jaar geleden zag het legendarische radioprogramma Rave Radio het licht op Radio Veronica, destijds nog op Radio 3. De show bestond ongeveer drie jaar, voordat het in het voorjaar van 1995 stopte. In die drie jaar presenteerde Adam Curry de nieuwste housemuziek van dat moment, geselecteerd en gedraaid door Ronald Molendijk, bijgestaand door Ron Hofland.

Op raveradio.nl wordt vanaf vandaag wekelijks een oude uitzending in mp3-formaat gepost!
